We are Sara Hodges(she/her) and John Wright(he/him). Originally from New Hampshire, we have called Maine home for the past ten years. Sparkplug Farm started on leased land on Vinalhaven Island in 2012, named for the Sparkplug lighthouse located in the Fox Islands thoroughfare that you could see from the farm. While on Vinalhaven, we grew 6 acres of diversified vegetables, operated a state inspected micro dairy, raised grass fed beef and pasture raised eggs. In 2017, we were able to purchase our own land and relocated the farm inland to Leeds, Maine.

The land we bought in Leeds is hilly and much better suited to grazing than vegetable production. While we are still avid gardeners, we transitioned the farm to a pasture-based livestock operation upon moving. With our original herd of six Milking Shorthorn cows, we bred in Red Devon and Milking Devon genetics. Our herd has grown to thirty animals and we now raise cows exclusively for grass fed beef production.

We expanded our livestock operation in 2019 to include non-gmo forest raised pork. We rotate our pigs through our woods where they can root around eating acorns, grubs and roots in addition to their grain ration. Our pigs are helping us reclaim some old pastures that have grown up over the years.

Our certified organic egg operation has helped us bring back the old hay fields that we bought and has increased the forage available to our cows. We move our chickens to fresh pasture each day and feed our hens certified organic grain.

We definitely would not have gotten where we are today without the continued support of our families, friends, mentors, and our island and mainland communities. We feel so fortunate to be able to do what we love every day and hope that we can continue to supply you with high quality food well into future.
